Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of depression in people with motor disabilities at La Vida Es Bella Foundation in the city of Neiva, Huila, in 2018. Materials and methods: Observational, descriptive, quantitative, and cross-sectional study, with a sample of 20 people with motor disabilities who belonged to a foundation of people with disabilities. Home visits were made, and the presence of depression was assessed through the Beck Depression Inventory, as well a questionnaire for socio-demographic characteristics. The systematization was carried out with the Excel statistical software, and the analysis by using Pearson's correlation coefficient and the value of P-Value. Results: it was found that 70% of the participants suffered from some type of depression (moderate 20%, intermittent states of depression 20%, mild 15% and serious 15%), a high prevalence that shows similarity to results of other studies. The socioeconomic stratum 1 predominated with 60%, what is directly related to the high prevalence of the subsidized health system (75%), professional educational level (5%) and unemployment (85%). The categorical variable cause of disability was found as the only variable associated with the level of depression (P = 0.037) and the symptoms most correlated with depression are sadness (r = 0.74), loss of pleasure (r = 0.704), dissatisfaction with oneself (r = 0.804), loss of interest (r = 0.745) and loss of energy (r = 0.798). Conclusions: Similar to the literature studied, the population with motor disability suffers from mood alterations (depression), they share similar characteristics such as low socioeconomic level and unemployment, situations that limit personal and social development, getting ineffective responses to disability adjustment, what compromises human integrity.
